Reading the other "reviews" is bizarre to me. They are in NO WAY a review of this book, which they havent even read yet. They are expressing how they feel about the idea of the book?!I look forward to reading this mother's experience with her girls. We all work so hard and struggle in our own worlds. Let's build each other up instead of judging each other please ?! Any one brave enough to tell the WHOLE truth about their expereice with parenting children with autism (the good, the bad, the funny, the ugly) get's 5 stars in my book.

That her daughters are autistic is not the author's to "own". The author should not be giving the message to any parent that their child's autism diagnosis can be distorted into a cause, a "battle", through which they can give meaning to their own lives. Battling against autism means battling against the child's innate mode of existence. It means attacking the child's deepest self. Disgusting.

I dislike. I have a child that is autisic and he is not a monster, he doesn’t have a disease, I am not a victor. I am a parent. Yes he is different, but my husband and I love and accept him with all his quirks. He requires love just like my NT child. Some parents just want sympathy for him at having the child they didn’t expect and this book is exactly that, a sad grasp for sympathy, at the expensive of her daughter.

Yet another sad tale of the poor autism warrior mommy who must gird her loins to battle the foul disease of autism that has imprisoned her children and kept them from being their true selves. Completely lacks any real understanding of what autism is (an inherited neurological difference, not a disease that can be cured or a condition caused by vaccines) or how to support her autistic daughters in reaching their full potential as autistic people (as opposed to forcing them to suppress their natural means of emotional self regulation and pretend to be neurotypical). Sadly this book gives in to the negative stereotypes about autism and is rife with ableism. She manages to turn a book about her children into a self congratulating ego stroke about her strength in battling the evil autism. If you truly would like to learn how to support your autistic children in growing and developing into well adjusted adults, skip the autism warrior parent books and read the blogs of actually autistic adults who can share what they wish their parents had done differently. I would link these blogs, but I suspect Amazon wouldn't appreciate it, so google "actually autistic blogs."

You couldn’t have even read the information correctly, as this is about her twin daughters.I am embarrassed for you all, ESPECIALLY those of you who have children with autism.I, myself, am excited to read about this families journey!

I absolutely can and will judge, as a parent with autism and asa parent of an autistic. There is enough ableist garbage out there. We don't need more abusive parents writing books about their GREAT STRUGGLE. I wonder if these people are aware that many if not most non verbal people eventually find their voice online (if their parents don't abusively restrict them). That's right, your children are finding their voices online, and we are docenting every time of of these autism mommies writes something like this, or when they advocate eugenics in the Facebook groups. We are here, and we will be the voice these children need until theycan find theirs inside.

Divergent neurology is not a virus. It's not a glitch. It's a different operating system. You're operating Windows, your daughters are Linux. You don't need to fight them. You don't need a cure. You don't need to win a victory. These are your children and this is who they are. The only victims here are the children, who are suffering from your ableism.

It's true that it's written for korn, but I've had little trouble adapting for Bash; many of the scripts run almost unchanged and the ones that don't provide a useful opportunity for exercise in adaptation. The authors prose is clear. His attitude is a bit challenging; he says early on that that his intention is to teach you how to -solve problems- by shell scripting, NOT to present a ream of canned solutions. This is NOT a reference text for any particular shell, you'll still need plenty of O'Reilly books, a web browser & etc.This book has enabled me to write a major project using scripting as the glue to hold together a hefty mass of file-moving daemons, fax/paging engines, python UI code, PostGreSQL database engine, networking/email, SSH, and Expect scripts on a Gnu Linux platform. I absolutely could not have done it without this book and I'm very grateful to Mr Michael for his work. If a later edition could more closely serve the needs of the masses by presenting more Bash examples and maybe throwing in a CD it would be a 5-star text.

Thank goodness for this book. It's a big, 3" thick book, that's more of a reference guide to do a bunch of really useful tasks. Example, you "could" start at page 1, but there's no point. Check the TOC or Appendix, pick what you want to learn, and just go directly to it.I'm not as versed in other Unix areas as I'd like to be, thus why I got the book, but it does seem to have a good examples of what's going to work w/ one shell vs. another.It's helped my career out in a big way. Heh, I mean, just tucking my shirt in and carrying a big 3" thick book around makes me appear smart. :-) "Dude, look at that 'Shell scripting' book, it's big, and he has his shirt tucked in today, he means business". Yeah buddy, you got that straight!I don't think this is for beginners, like me, it doesn't "explain" a lot of what you're doing, at least in the detail that my cat-like brain needs, but hey, that's what Google's for. What it does give the beginner, is lots of questions to take else where, and I learned from those other areas. Example, I joined "unix.com's" forums because of this book, there I met a bunch of people that are so insanely smart, it's "insane", (seriously, how in the world do people know this stuff? One of the coolest websites I've been to was "nobodyisbornwithlinuxknowledge.com", or something like that). It also gives us beginners the concept behind what it's doing, therefore, you're now smart enough to ask the mighty oracle called "Google" the right question, to get the right answer.I love this book, period, and I hate 3" books, particularly 3" books that are of a technical content. The information in this book is very valuable, moreso, it encouraged me to spread out to other areas, and it opened me up, to the open source world. Am I a scripting genius w/ this book in my hands, no, did I write 3 scripts w/in a month that is going to save my group a lot of money and man power, yes, yes yes! Did it make this lazy man's job easier, oh my yes.... I love this book, and I'm a beginner, w/ his shirt tucked in now, (well at least Mon-Wed). :-)

Mastering UNIX Shell Scripting is a good book on writing Korn shell scripts. If you need BASH or CSH or something else, get another book.All of the examples in the book are directed towards Systems Administrators. That is not a bad thing. Too many books give you examples that have no use outside the one bit they are trying to teach you. Each example in this book has a real world function. The scripts cover Linux, HP-UX, Solaris and AIX. The examples are straight forward and have lots of useful comments and techniques.My only complaint about the book is it lacks any real reference value. It would be nice to have a summary of language features. Even with that drawback I would recommend this book over the O'Reiely book.

So far, has been OK as a reference. However, the index has no links and no page numbers - its just a list of topics (how helpful!!!). Not sure if this is the kindle app's problem, or the publishers, but they should sort it out.Also, Amazon, why in the world is there no link to the index under the book icon?For reference books, the index is where most reading starts.Please please please put an index link in the "book icon" menu!Thanks.

This book is tremendously valuable for anyone who cares about maintaining healthy, functional and productive relationships with self and others. This is not just for professional counselors; all of us will benefit from this book if we put the author’s insights and succinct teachings to use. A good friend pointed me to this book after I shared with her the bewilderment I felt watching the dysfunctions of a family that I had to interact with from time to time. Chronic deception and manipulation are so ingrained in their behavior. As a bystander I never could understand how they got that way. This book truly gave me a compass to navigate my relationship with this difficult family. In truth the book is also a useful guide for managing relationships in a wide range of work and social settings. It helps me see people and their behavior more clearly, and it gives me tools to manage my interaction with them more mindfully. I’m thankful to my friend who introduced me to this book and grateful to the author for sharing her insights and knowledge in such a clear and helpful manner. I recommend this highly intelligent book wholeheartedly.

I am so grateful for this book. The author uses straightforward language to really illustrate the dynamics of dealing with challenging personalities. The knowledge is valid for dealing with less extreme examples and is useful as tool for self discovery in how we deal with others. She provides the necessary tools for improving how we relate to such individuals in a way that holds the subject accountable while protecting one's self from manipulation and injury. This book is useful for both professionals and lay persons alike.

Livingston's brief treatment lays out in clear prose, with helpful examples at every point, the nature, causes, and possibilities for treatment of the chronically hurtful person (CHP, a satisfying acronym for those who have had run-ins with the California Highway Patrol). Some professionals may wish for more detailed technical analysis and reference to secondary literature, but others will appreciate Livingston's more experiential approach. Helpful aspects of the book include Livingston's care to distinguish behaviors that serve as CHP identifiers from occasional or nonsystemic misbehavior; insightful speculation about causation (e.g., either an over-strict or over-indulgent upbringing can contribute to an adult CHP); realistic caution about success through therapy; encouragement of self-care on the part of CHP loved ones. Defining the problem as Livingston does is an important first step for either a therapist or a family member, but as Livingston acknowledges, the very nature of the beast in this case renders ineffective most therapy or relationships. As an erstwhile enabler of a CHP in my own family, I had hoped for more of a silver bullet solution, but I am grateful for a clear and realistic presentation on the part of this experienced and wise therapist.

This book should be required reading. Very helpful exam of the personalities of difficult people with suggested causes explored andInterventions proffered. It explains a lot.

Very interesting and useful - identified many behaviors that characterize what makes mean people simply mean, and helped with some of the strategies for dismantling their attitude.

This book is a must read - especially for young people about to embark on their adult lives.The information is like a protective vaccination that helps immunize them against people who can be pathogenic to them. And for adults who've already had hurtful relationships, it's like a healing balm.Highly recommended.

If you are a social worker, therapist, counselor, or teacher, read this book. If you are an employer, salesperson, or committee member of any kind, read this book. Most of us have at one time or another dealt with some "chronically hurtful people" whether in a work setting or in our personal lives. Roxanne Livingston's book provides insight into these relationships that will be helpful in keeping you sane as well as providing basic tools for how to better deal with them. This is a practical as well as readable approach to identifying and dealing with difficult people.

Lush, spacious watercolors of charming Stillwater and the open neighborhood will entrance children, as will the dramatic black-and-white pictures of the comical animal characters that illustrated Stillwater's Zen stories. This set of books about Stillwater the panda are wondrous. Art work is beautiful, and enchanting. The stories are unique and thought provoking. My 3 yro has all of them, and loves them. He's still too young to get the depth of the stories, but still the story provides something he can grab onto now, and as he has grown, repeated reading have allowed him to gain new insights. The characters are pleasant and relatable to a child.What I really appreciate about the story is they are not static stories. There's levels to them. And they are not just another reiteration of the same stories you see repeated in children's book time and time again. For example, rather then just talk about being mean, or sharing, or considerate, on story is about a child who wants to play robots with Stillwater. The child tells Stillwater that he will be "the bad guy". So, with some cookies, Stillwater demonstrates that being the bad guy is no fun for himself, or for others, but still agrees to be the bad guy. Then allows the child to decide to play differently by having both robots go on an adventure together, changing the playtime from a conflict oriented imagination, to a cooperative and positive game.The feel of these books is not a classic story, there is a mundanity to and a flow that provides a very nice change of pace. The Not just how you interact with others, but how you interact with yourself. This should be obvious from the "Zen" in all the titles, but until you have read it (20 times at least) it is hard to appreciate how these books flow and form a story that is both thought provoking for little (and old) minds, and still provide a story that is immersive and childlike.I sincerely hope Mr. Muth makes more of this story line, and if not, I thank him for these pieces of joy.

I think I get a bigger kick out of this book than my 7 year old daughter does. It's got some great mini stories in it that she doesn't quite grasp the meaning of, but I sure do, and I LIKE IT! There is a mini story/lesson in the book about a couple of mice that are munks. The oldest of the two does a good deed for which he is treated rudely and isn't thanked. He basically carries a rather mean mouse from her sedan, over a muddy road and rain puddles to the side of the street and is set down. The mean mouse pushes him aside and without ever thanking him, goes about her way. The two mice continue on their walk and several hours later, after the younger mouse has been brooding over the whole rude situation, he opens his mouth to protest. He is angry about the rude mouse and it's been bothering him the whole time they've been walking and, as he points out, the older mouse doesn't seem to be upset. After the younger mouses outburst the older mouse replies something like "are you still carrying her? I put her down hours ago". What a great lesson! I hardly do it justice in my review, but it's little lesson/stories like these that really make the book well worth it, for old and young alike!

The stories are short and simple enough for the kids to follow, the illustrations engaging, but the ideas conveyed really have sparked a different way for my boys to think about some situations. We especially apply the good news vs bad news story in our regular talks now. It helps my 3 yr and 5 yr old boys see that there is good and bad all in the mix, that some things initially thought to be bad/good can turn out to be the opposite. It also helps my older one who is usually a more black and white, glass half empty kind of person to see the possibilities of reassessment or reinterpretation. I want to expose them to more stories like these.

"There's a bear outside" Yes Stillwater has arrived in the back yard with his large red umbrella. He is a kind, poite and gentle Panda. After the children have formally met Stillwater they each take turns visiting him, upon each visit Stillwater has a story to tell the children. Each story is a lesson in achieving zen. It's quite lovely, the pictures change from the beautiful watercolor of the world of Stillwater and the children to a different - simpler form of illustration when Stillwater tells a story - which was an extremely effective way to see that you were now inside Stillwater's stories.The first story stillwater tells is about his Uncle Ry who catches a robber in his house and gives him what he has. The second story Stillwater tells is about luck, somethings that may seem like great luck at first could be bad luck, and bad luck could be good luck. The last story is the story of the monks, one physically carries a woman and the other is carrying a grudge about her.All of the stories leave room for discussion if you want to go there, or you can simply read the book and let your children absorb what they will. This book left us in a very peaceful state.The age recommendation is 4 to 8, I think this is appropriate. I think at 6 or above your children will be more prone to abosrb the stories of zen. However, the book is very charming and likeable for your [...].

In the harmonious framework of this book, the West interacts with the East, the Past teaches the Present and the Humans listen to the Animal-masters. Sensitivity and respect for all nature underlying the veins of the book and children of all ages will be mesmerized by the graceful yet humorous watercolor/ink drawings and at the same time learn from the rejuvenated classic Chinese stories. Stillwater, the relaxed and free-spirited Panda, in his ZEN SHORTS has brought us so much nostalgic and deep delight.Come On, Rain

I got this right before Christmas as a gift to a nephew. This was part of the book sale Amazon had, $5 off $20 on books. The artwork is so beautiful, and this would be ideal for any kid to explore. I didn't get a chance to read it with my nephew, so I don't know what the stories are about, but it looks culturally responsive.

I was disappointed in this book. True, there are some lovely photographs of the High Line, the Lurie Garden and other projects. There is a reasonable, albeit long-winded, discussion of designing a garden to mimic nature, but the production values are wanting, which is surprising because I have many books from Timber Press. The author makes reference to many plants that are not listed or described in the book, the plant is only included in a large garden dominated by grasses. I had to guess what plant he was describing. In some cases, I wrote down the name of the plant to look for it on the internet.At the back of the book there is a plant list, divided into three categories: perennials, grasses and ferns. There are no photographs of most of the plants listed; there is a schedule, similar to a spread sheet, which attempts to describe the plant. In this section of the book, the photographs of the individual plants vary greatly by quality; some are out of focus, some show flowers and no leaves, some show leaves and no flowers, most were not in scale. I had the impression that the photos were just lying around and were not taken specifically for this book. It seemed odd that there were photographs of the most common plants but no photographs of lesser known and rarer plants.The author includes many diagrams of the plant designs of many, many gardens, including block-by-block patches of the High Line. While of interest, this is over-kill and the pages would be better used to show the plants described in the gardens.Lastly, there was a sameness to the gardens featured in the book; this sameness encouraged me to study the photographs with great care. By carefully examining the photos, it was possible to discern the subtle differences between the gardens featured.The gardens in the book were in full sun; it would be interesting to know how the Oudolf principles apply to shade gardens which cannot support the many grasses featured.

I am a huge Piet Oudolf fan. But the perspective offered in this book is of prairie style with lots and lots of grasses, which is beautiful in the right context, by which I mean you must have a large open space to be successful. For the average gardener,with a small to medium garden surrounding a house, this style is not useful. I wish I could utilize more of Mr Oudolf's ideas. Maybe someday....My only problem was that the mailer had put the book into a padded bag, and it was in so tight, that when I pulled it out, the dust jacket ripped. So much for my beautiful new book!

I have a great deal of experience and education with plants and planting design. I think this is a very good book as it gets into particulars and specifics of planting design. Most gardening books I don't bother with as they are for people who are just starting. That doesn't mean you can't get a lot from this book if you are a beginner. It would be a very good way to begin.After reading other reviews of this book I think that one of the great values of this book is to suggest a more aesthetically pleasing way of using plants in a more sustainable and environmentally responsible way. As a very savvy writer (Anne Whiston Spirn?)has said, we tend to think of sustainability as a hair shirt, something we must don no matter how uncomfortable or awkward. This book shows how lovely native (or non-invasive, climate appropriate, non-native) plantings can be. I think part of the value for me of this book is to introduce more people to the beauty of a more sustainable or even regenerative style of garden. Because this book encourages a more sophisticated design style that depends on understanding how and why a plant flourishes, it is by default a more environmentally friendly garden guide. Maybe I shouldn't have let that cat out of the bag. I wouldn't want people to ignore the book because it is more environmentally responsible. Using plants in a way that is closer to how they would grow in their native habitat means that you are using what nature has designed to be healthy. Part of the value of this book is that it describes structure in a way that isn't about strict geometry or unnatural forms. Structure in this book is about how a group of one plant or of a partnership of different plants "reads" when one looks at it. There are still attributes like layers and arrangements for bloom time, color, etc. but it encourages us to understand why some plants are better in partnership, that is, inter-planted and why some plants are better in a drift.You cannot go wrong in getting this book. Even if you have a small space to plant in the idea of mixing plants can be very important to your garden. Allowing plants to grow as they are designed to do and understanding what shape that takes over time means less disturbance and therefore healthier soil biology because your garden will need fewer inputs. BTW, that means lower cost with greater output!

This is a very enjoyable and informative book about 'naturalistic' planting design. It focuses on the forms/architecture of perennial plants and theories of how to combine them for visually richness. It reviews many well-known designers' styles and techniques and breaks them down into a clear, easy to understand language and syntax. It is focused more on open, sunny planting sites, but does briefly mention woodland edge plantings - in any case, the design language is the same, but the syntax is different. There are many rules of thumb to note, but the whole book is a great collection of planting design theories that have been well tested. I recommend this if you are a hobby gardener looking for the techniques used for 'magazine cover' plantings or if you're a designer who wants to understand the history, evolution, and theory of planting design to inform your own creativity. I haven't found another book that discusses theory so thoroughly and in a manner that is so clear and adaptable.

As a gardener, I am amazed and in awe of the techniques used in Piet Oudolf’s gorgeous garden designs. The advice given on how to plant in this way is simple and easy to understand, though I admit I had to look up some of the terminology. I appreciate the emphasis on both public and private sustainability, and support for biodiversity. He designs the most beautiful biosuales I have ever seen.

I am an avid lover of Dim Sum. My fascination started when my mother took me to try Dim Sum as a child and has only increased with every weekend I make it to a place that serves this delectable array of small morsels. When I saw this book show up, I made a happy squeal and went through it immediately. This cookbook does not disappoint. I need to wait for the holiday seasons to be over to be able to fully dedicate myself to trying the breadth of the recipes inside, but I am very excited about what I've read.This book has a clear and concise layout, with recipes neatly organized into categories. I enjoy the wide variety of options, not just limiting it to a few types. I understand that there could be whole volumes dedicated to the varieties. I also am excited about the recipes given for the oils and sauces, because that is where the nuances of flavor really step in to elevate a dish.

This book surpassed my expectation in terms of content and depth of the main subject matter: Asian Dumplings! I accidentally came upon Andrea Nguyen's website when I was looking for the perfect bao recipe. I have been to many cities in mainland China where dumplings are what is bread to us here in the West but Ms. Nguyen generously touches in this book the multitude of cultures woven in the dumpling culture.I frequently visited Yangzhou in the past 10 years and while there, the owners of the factory I was working with would bring me to a very old place quite well known for all types of dumplings. If I am not mistaken the name of the restaurant is Fuchun Chaze which was established in 1885. This is where I tasted my first crab soup dumpling thinking it was soup with crab dumplings. At first I was not so sure what to do with it when it came with a straw, not knowing that the crab soup was inside the dumpling! This place was steeped with tradition and I always looked forward to having breakfast there (courtesy of my host who pulled strings to get a reservation every time). It always fascinated me watching the cooks make all the different types of shumai and baos through a glass window. I felt so privileged to have been to such a place.This book will be a must in my cookbook collection and will be cherished as I go through the many recipes that I would love to try. I could only wish that all cookbook authors could be like Ms. Nguyen: clear and concise contents, notes on useful tips for success, enough pictures to whet up your appetite but not too much that the instructions fall short. I bao to you Andrea, and thank you for writing such a wonderful cookbook!

I have no idea what made me buy this book as I had taken out several books on dumplings from the library last year and they were completely inadequate, confusing, uninspiring and poorly conceived. I couldn't even look inside this one to see what was in there, right? But, overcome with a desire for dumplings, I splurged.The dumplings I have made from Andrea Nguyen's book have been frighteningly delicious. The information is clearly presented with good line drawings to show you how and lovely photos to show what you're supposed to end up with. The ingredient lists are all minimal and easily obtained. You will make no large investments in items you will use once. (Don't you hate that about some cookbooks?) There are so many to chose from, the only problem will be making up your mind which one tonight. The door to delectable dumplings is now open.This is a wonderful book. Thank you, Ms Nguyen.

I made at least 10 recipes in the first two weeks of having this book. Every single one of them was delicious! My son said that the sesame balls tasted like the ones we used to get on weekends at our local Asian market (when they weren't sold out). I'm still within working on improving my shaping skills, meantime, even the ugly ones are delicious. I can't tell your how many pounds of char siu pork I've made, along with scores of steamed buns. My boys would eat them as fast as I made them. I finally made a double batch and froze them. I had to hide them in the freezer. The pork used is also great on bagels with cream cheese.A side bonus is that I'm finally using my old tortilladora. I bought it on Amazon about ten years ago. It was pretty inexpensive, but made some of the dumpling wrappers much easier to make. It's definitely worth the small investment if you're going to make dumplings.I ended up raving about the book so much that my friend's mother is ordering her own copy when she gets back home to Toronto.

This cook book is amazing. A gentleman loaned me his copy and after 20 minutes pursuing it, I ordered it.This book is the only one you need to make all manner of dumplings. You are guided through making your own dough wrappers. (Hint: if you want a small enough rolling pin, in Asian Markets it is called a "Noodle Stick," not a rolling pin.)The neophyte dumpling cook is guided through, step by step, for everything from Bao to Goyzas. And, what are dumplings without dipping sauce you say? Well there are plenty of authentic sauces in the book. You are also taught, step by step, how to properly pleat and food specific dumplings so they match tradition.

LOVE LOVE LOVE this book. I've tried many of Andrea Nguyen's recipes off her website, buying this book was a great decision on my part. The recipes are excellent and turn out results better than I'd imagined I could ever do. Yes, it takes practice, but I seem to have no trouble finding help eager to gobble down my trials, mistakes and experiments. Always tasty, even when not very pretty :-)This book has given me a LOT of confidence in my quest to learn dim sum techniques, and I am honestly surprised how simple some of the most expensive restaurant dishes are to make. Did I say LOVE LOVE LOVE???

Published by Fondation Cartier Pour L'Art Contemporain, and Hirmer Publishers, 2011.The objects are drawn from the collection of Anne and Jacques Kerchache and originate mostly from Benin (formerly known as "Dahomey"). The "bocio" (small fetish objects), are generally well photographed, with some nice close-up details. However, the photography does get pretty "artsy" in places, and some of the smaller pieces are lost on the page. Although there are some striking items featured, many others are rather ordinary, and some (oddly) do not convey the power or presence that you would expect from voodoo artifacts. (The English text uses the word "Vodun", not "Voodoo", except in the title.) Some of the text is interesting and informative, and I have to admit, that some of it is....just....well....pretentious nonsense.So...a split-personality book which overall does a good job in telling us how and why voodoo/vodun originated in Africa, and how it was later taken to the Caribbean during the slave trade. I'd rate the book at 3.5 stars and suggest that it is worth having if you can find it at a reasonable price.Book Rating : 7/10.
