Like all great animal stories, Bring Jade Home reminds us what it is to be human. Yes, Jade is a remarkable and brave pup, and her adventure is truly inspiring. However, the book goes well beyond that. It details how Jade's story of survival in Yellowstone touches a wide swath of people, from her loving owners to the thousands of strangers who followed the search on social media. Wrapped into Jade's survival is the survival of David, Laura, Kat, and of Yellowstone itself. This book works so well because it works on multiple levels. It's part family drama, part history, part science journal. This is a dog book, for sure, one that dog lovers will love. But the more important word in the title is "Home." What does it mean to love an animal? What does it mean to bring that animal into your home and into your heart?
Two dogs and two people in a car on vacation. What could be more peaceful and relaxing than that? Until a pickup truck drifts into your lane at 45 miles and hour and hits you head on! On a highway in Yellowstone National Park, with medical care a long distance and time away, the badly hurt driver had to be airlifted out, and the passenger taken by ambulance. Their two dogs survived the accident, and a Park Ranger volunteered to take the dogs and hold them until the injured folks could get them. Unfortunately, the crash had splintered one of the crates, and the second the door was opened by the ranger, one of the dogs bolted out of the SUV and took off into the deep woods. This is the story of the 6 week long search for Jade, an Australian Sheep Dog with piercing ice-blue eyes. They locked eyes for a few seconds, and then with no sign of recognition the dog bolted into the deep forest. I felt the the heart-rending anguish of the owner as he realized that the dog he had known was no longer there; instead there was a wild animal which would never be a pet again.Buy the book; read it in a place where you don't care if people see you shed tears. I love dogs and I love Yellowstone, so the book, Bring Jade Home, was a must-read. The true story is full of adventure, sorrow, and thankfully happiness. The blue-eyed Jade survived more than 40 days in the Yellowstone wilderness which set a new record for our four-legged friends. The journey of dog and family will put tears in your eyes and a smile on your face. Can’t wait for the movie.

If you followed the media coverage of Jade, an Australian Shepherd, lost in Yellowstone Park for more than 40 days, you may think you know this story. But this beautifully written book brings home what it would be like to agonize about the fate of a very young dog suddenly having to survive among the wolves and Grizzlies in the Park. Laura Gillice and David Sowers, although injured themselves in the auto accident that caused the frightened Jade to escape, do everything they can think of to lure Jade out of the woods, even when they aren't sure she still survives. It's through the efforts of dedicated Park Rangers and vigilant Park visitors that Jade is finally spotted. You'll rejoice almost as much as Laura and David when Jade finally decides to return to them--it gave me goosebumps!
I work in the park, but was on vacation when Jade went missing. When I returned, and was told about her, I was so sure she did not survive. But then friends told me she had been seen! Of course, I had to join in the search, and was thrilled with the outcome. The story is a happy one, and is beautifully told in "Bring Jade Home." The loving bond between master and dog is a strong one indeed. The determination and persistence of Jade's owners was incredible, as was Jade's decision to finally come out of hiding. Very well written. I highly recommend this book to anyone age 10 - 100!
Great story! I live and work at Yellowstone and watched this story play out in person. Amazing how people jumped in to try and save this dog. Even though I was here and helping as I could, I enjoyed reading the story of every thing that was going on behind the scene. Movie material here!!
If you love animals, especially dogs, this is a must read. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. As a dog owner, I can only imagine what an emotional roller coaster this was like for Jade's family. Definitely shows the power of people coming together to help others. Just beautiful!
