About the Author

American author Stephen Crane began writing early in life, and was already a published author by the age of sixteen. Among Crane s best known works are Maggie: A Girl of the Streets, which is considered to be the first literary work in the early American tradition of Naturalism, a literary movement marked by detailed realism and the acknowledgement of social conditions of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and The Red Badge of Courage, which was influenced by his own experiences in military school and personal contact with Civil-War veterans. Crane died in 1900 at the age twenty-eight of tuberculosis, but had a significant and lasting impact on twentieth-century literature, influencing early modernist writers such as Ernest Hemingway.

I think I was 17 when I first read The Red Badge of Courage. It was a freshman literature class in college and it was in the summer term. It's a short book and because I was young, I just wanted to get to the end to know what happened. The one thing I learned through reading this short novel and in the professor's discussion after, is that one cannot tear into a great book of literature the way one reads through a best seller (finishing it in one night, reading it by the glow of a flashlight under the covers). It is not formulaic.A classic work of fiction such as The Red Badge of Courage, takes many readings before you can say that you have truly read it and enjoyed it. Like a gourmet meal, you need to digest this book mindfully, reading slowly and noting the richness of its imagery and the life-likeness of the description. It is verisimilitude at its finest -- but as tight as prose can be. Sparse and yet rich, layered and textured in imagery and language. It's the story of a boy who went off and joined the Civil War without knowing that he signed on for a voyage of self-discovery and a coming to his own. He will know himself far deeper than it was comfortable for him to know himself but in the end, because he became acquainted with himself, the vastness of his potential for bravery and cowardice, he comes out a "hero" -- one who went to fight and fought valiantly despite his fear. It is a retelling of the hero's journey and it never grow old or cliché.Of course, in the end, you will come to believe that war is not a good thing even if you manage to survive it.Do you know someone who is thinking of joining the military or the armed forces? They would benefit from a reading of this book. They will at least sign up having an inkling of what could happen to them.Happy reading!

This is the second time that I’ve read this book. The first time was when I was a child, maybe 10 years old. The Vietnam War was raging, and the tale of a young man, barely old enough to serve his country, yet volunteering for service in our own country’s Civil War, left a lasting impression on me. The events in this book, while having taken place a hundred or so years earlier, still was relevant. A youth struggling with his fears, first running from battle, then actually relishing it in almost a maniacal way, led me to the understanding that war was the same no matter what the setting or century. The terrors, the fears, the coming of age in a young infantryman; all these things remain the same today as they did fifty years ago or a hundred and fifty. I have never been a soldier, and neither was the author. But yet he places you there, on the battlefield, in the encampment, in a place far from home and family. Any lover of historical fiction will find this book compelling, even riveting; a timeless novel.

I finally read this classic and was immediately swept away by the tale of young Henry Fleming (often referred to as ‘the youth’ in Red Badge of Courage), who itches to go to war, despite his mother’s wishes.Stephen Crane’s writing has aged gracefully since the novel was first published in 1893. The forbidding atmosphere of war is ideally suited to a style that might be considered florid by today’s standards. The potent tone fits the story but the writing feels strangely modern, authentic and devoid of sentimentality.Henry’s character is laid bare as he experiences both cowardice and bravery in battle. Both emotions are seen as almost uncontrollable responses in times of war and the author doesn’t pass judgment, letting subtle ironies prevail instead. Red Badge of Courage is as much a psychological novel as a war story. And faced with what Henry and many of his comrades confronted, the reader might well have turned and headed for the trees as well.Images of war are lightly rendered in comparison to modern novels but just as jarring. In one scene the wounded trudge to their impending deaths (as anyone injured in battle during the Civil War frequently had mere hours to live), and young Henry describes a soldier he encounters who has two wounds, ‘one in the head, bound with a blood-soaked rag, and the other in the arm, making that member dangle like a broken bough.’Hemingway said that Red Badge of Courage was ‘one of the finest books of American literature.’ Reading Crane’s prose, it’s easy to see precursors of Hemingway’s own style:‘It rained. The procession of weary soldiers became a bedraggled train, despondent and muttering, marching with churning effort in a trough of liquid brown mud under a low, wretched sky.’Stephen Crane modestly stated that he wanted to write a war story reminiscent of the books he read as a boy, and ended up penning an adventure story that doubles as fine literature and perhaps the ultimate anti-war novel.

This is a classic I missed in my youth that I am glad I finally read. This intimate view of war is a sobering account of the atrocity of war that humans inflict upon each other, beginning with a gleeful, manly call to arms! The reader follows the young farm boy, who follows the call of noble warfare, the image of noble heroes in his mind, off to conquer the villainous enemy. And we go with him, on the march, in camp and onto the battlefield, battling with him, not only the physical threat, but also the psychological one, to a point, where all the questions of war seem to echo our own concerns. It is a great book, for those who have imagined the horror and glory of war, but more so, for those who have not pondered such, a chance to open, fully as a human being in armed conflict.

Imagine being given a private tour through the world’s most important museum by a charming and knowledgeable insider; ushered into rooms you didn’t know existed, shown the often-infinitesimal differences between a fake and a masterpiece, entertained with captivating stories and enlightened by a connoisseur’s insight about the attributes of all priceless art; be it a bust by Gian Lorenzo Bernini or a quilt from Gee’s Bend, Alabama. This marvelous book holds your hand and guides you from “I don’t know much about art but I know what I like” to “I know what I like and I can clearly articulate why”. It's generous in the way that the best books by experts are; it gives the reader/viewer a sense of confidence and the nerve to envision that with enough study and enthusiasm, mastery might be within reach.

If you are curious about the world of art, especially the relationship between the museum director or curator, the academic art historian, the art dealer/auctioneer, and collector, this will be a rare, insightful and candid view.Maxwell Anderson grew up with an unusual education, in retrospect seemingly tailor-made for his vocation. He cut his curatorial teeth at the Met, directed the Whitney, and most recently is Director of the Dallas Museum of Art. This very readable account of his experiences is at times a bit self-congratulatory, but not in an offensive way for me. The writing is generally good, a bit uneven at times, but eminently readable and enjoyable for anyone with even a passing interest in the subject.

Extremely well written - approaches art from the standpoint of defining quality, artistic interpretation, use of materials, revelance to the history of the visual arts and personal appreciation.Does not use the 'usual' suspects for discussion - selects works that truly reflect artistic integrity in all of it's many guises.

This man's style of writing is exquisite, plus we are led to understand his development of comprehending "good, better, best" with respect to art.

The five features of what constitutes "quality" are appropriate and well thought out, but subjective which, in turn, makes the entire discussion of what constitutes quality moot. Also, the author spends a lot of effort in self-aggrandizement telling us how he found important works that others had missed, placed them in time through his extensive knowledge of classical art, etc. If you get the message on the five caracteristics, the rest is fluff.

Sarah Major has created another masterpiece for little children and their families! "Meow Said the Cow" is a must-have, adorable, funny, enchanting rhyming tale. This is part of the series of books featuring silly Auntie Lily. Young readers will giggle in delight when they see the pictures and hear the wonderful Rhymes. Auntie Lily helps them out because now and then she will tell you a true fact so see if you can find the things that are true. See if your children notice the way Auntie Lily helps you sort the silly things from the facts. There is also a little quiz in the back to see if little ones can fill in the blanks from the list of answers. This little book is simply irresistible so get your copy today. By the way, if you haven't gotten the first book in the series, "Have you ever Seen?" you should jump at the chance to purchase that too. Both books are sensational. I have no doubt you'll want to read them over and over again.Review by children's author Deanie Humphrys-Dunne

This is the second book in the Auntie Lily bedtime silly story collection. I liked it even more than the first. The lead character is a silly cow who tries to imitate other animals like a cat, hen, donkey, cheetah, monkey, snake and frog, to name just a few. In the process, children learn the characteristics of many animals. Rhymes are crisp and sharp, and the alliteration allows the sounds to roll off the tongue when reading aloud. Adults will enjoy this one as much as the children who are listening.Illustrations are vivid and expressive, allowing even the youngest child to clearly get the message. This book is a perfect choice for an older sibling reading to a younger brother or sister. Perhaps my favorite part is the riddle section at the end that asks the child to answer ten riddles. After reading the book a few times, many readers will be able to create their own riddles. This series is a clever, creative, interactive approach to learning. Highly recommended as a bedtime story or read aloud for toddlers, preschoolers, and elementary school age children.

Meow Said the Cow” is brilliantly funny. It engages the kids and their laughter is contagious. Actually, I am willingly admitting to the fact that I too enjoy the funny rhymes, the silly situations, and the perfect illustrations.Cows are funny.Cows trying to act as other animals. Hysterical.A cow crawling into a mouse hole. A cow racing fast like a cheetah. A cow slithering like a snake. A cow swinging off trees like a monkey. And much more.I’ll be getting the first book in the series, and hope it’s as entertaining as this one.

It put a smile on my face to see my Granddaughter snicker and giggle listening to the book and really loved the end with the cute riddles.she surprised herself when she got the answers right.I would really like to see more of these books, the illustration for a kindle book was awesome and I could read the words unlike some books you have to zoom in. .wonderful book!!

Love this book, very colorful and rhymes are catchy and fun! Highly recommend! Another excellent book from Mazor Books. Keep them coming, my family loves them!

Read with my e and I hear old grandkids and they say "It was super funny! "They liked it because it was ridiculous seeing the cow in different animal forns.

This is great kids book. And funny, too. My great granddaughter will love it. I can just hear her giggling away.

My grandchildren love this book. The rhymes make it very enjoyable for the ones under 6. I like the way it incorporates learning about different animals into a fun story. The riddles at the end are an extra bonus.
