Another true account told in first person by the young protagonist. This account, however, unlike Year of Impossible Goodbyes, does not delve into the atrocities that are committed, but more concerns itself with how the protagonist deals with having to stay in hiding for years in a small room; her thoughts, feelings, observations, and relationships with family, friends, and strangers, and with betrayal from people who she thought dear to her. This may be one account that could be shared with young ones, but sensitively. The protagonist’s strength of spirit and faith in people and the world shown in the day-in and day-out boring existence she must resolve herself to, shows how courage and love can transcend, though not erase, even the horrors of war. The book reads like a fiction novel and is sure to catch the hearts of many readers. Warning, some language may offend some readers.

I read this book many, many, years, ago (1975) when I was young and it moved me so much I never forgot the story or the book. My son needed a book to read for school and I felt this would be a good one for him, even though it is about girls. He is very interested in the events surrounding World War II and likes to read fiction and non-fiction about it. He read this book and it was also very emotional for him. The fact that the family did not realize the scope of the war, or how horrific it really was hit home with him. The frustration and depression of the girls was understood by a 12 year old boy (going on 40) and the fact that the Gentile family put their lives at risk to hide the girls really enforced the idea that it is sometimes difficult to do the right thing, but you do what is right no matter. He thinks this is a book that will stay with him, too. It stayed with me (I remembered the name of after all those years, and the story line) and I cannot say enough about it.

Parents can safely introduce the subject of the Holocaust with this book even when their children are in elementary school. Johanna Reiss has in precise language and an authentic voice introduced complex characters and plots. She steer clears of generalizations and stereotypes (such as “all Germans were evil”). And she avoids comparisons of pain. She doesn’t romanticize history by excluding dramatic intensity and confusion, two things to which adolescents easily relate; and she doesn’t overemphasize heroic tales or the worst aspects of human nature; nor imply that there were as many courageous rescuers as there were villains. The Upstairs Room reflects the turbulent times of WW II, as well as the turbulent time in an adolescent’s life.

A book from my childhood, now shared with my daughters. We bought several copies to give away as gifts as well. For readers 9 and up. We will give our copies to sister families, families of Dutch descent, (the sheltering family is strict Dutch Christian) and Jewish friends. Very good for exploring the sister relationship and what it means to grow up under truly challenging circumstances. I loved this book when I was young. So did my 10 year-old daughter when she read it just recently. Her 8-year-old sister still finds anything about the Holocaust too upsetting even though both sisters survive the German occupation in this book. Still, when the time is right it will be easier to start her WWII education with this book than with Anne Frank's deeply sad story.

This was my absolute favorite book when I was in school. I remembered the basic story, but am so glad I read it again. I still love it and am looking forward to reading the sequel; I didn't even know there was one. If you're a history buff, or like Anne Frank's story, you need to read this. You'll be glad you did.

The Upstairs Room is the true story of a child who was hidden from the Nazis in a room for two years by a family who understood that discovery of their deed would lead to their certain death. This young child had to remain quiet and subdue her normal impulses to run and play or even to just be outdoors on a beautiful day! She also withstood the misery of not having enough to eat or clothes to wear during frigid cold winters. But it is not a dark and dreary tale, because she found beauty and goodness in her surroundings as only a child could. Ms. Reiss created a heartwarming book, with such honesty and openness. We might see so much through the eyes of a child, beginning with gratitude for all that we take for granted.

"The Upstairs Room" is an excellent read. Told from the perspective of a young girl, this should be required reading for children of a similar age. The story introduces the Holocost in a way that young readers may especially be able to relate to. The protagonist, being only a child, has little understanding of the real dangers of the situation. Having forced to live through gradually worsening conditions, Anne and her sister start to get restless and reckless, especially when German soldiers move into the home they are hiding in. As an adult reader, I found it to be a bit simplistic, however, the author's original intended audience was her own children, so I can not find fault with this. Older readers may especially find the humanity in the supporting characters of this story to be inspiring. In addition to a tale based on the first hand account of the author, this account also reveals the courage of the family that originally took in the girls, the constant fears of the family that gambled with their own lives to kept the girls hidden, the stupid risks taken by all for what might be a frivolous desire, the scary consequences of that choice, and the pride of these "simple farmers". I especially liked the end of the story.

Great Historical Fiction based off of a true story in Johanna Reiss' childhood. It was heart wrenching, interesting, and really captures the emotions.

I love to practice and improve my German by reading stories in easy German. This book was perfect for that. It contains a variety of amusing stories. It is well organized for learners. Important words and phrases are highlighted and explained in a glossary at the end of each chapter of each story. There is a German summary at the end of each chapter, and 5 multiple choice questions in German to test comprehension. The book must have been proofread well, as I found no errors.

The series of short stories is varied in setting and genre. It was good to read and practice my German again - though I still needed to read most stories with a dictionary on the side for a few words. I was happy with the book for the language I learned, the stories and plots were a secondary feature and were generally straightforward settings for expanding knowledge of the language.

Im a enjoying working on it. The stories arent great but the opportunity to expand my vocabulary and see how some of the grammer works is very valuable. Im learning German using Duolingo and am using this to supplement the wonderful program.

This is a very good book for intermediate learners like myself. The instructions at the start of the book on how to read the text effectively are helpful and set the tone, at least for me, on what to expect and how to proceed. One important point that stands out and helps to relieve learners frustration is, "You must accept that you won't understand everything you read in the story." I find that I learn more and retain more reading texts like these than grinding away in a grammar book.

These short stories, presented as they are, were exactly what I needed. I fit the profile to a "T". I had tried reading the German language news and even purchased a novel written in German. I found both too difficult to enjoy. I have read these short stories several times and each new reading brings out more interesting detail.

Super good book, keeps you engaged and is slow and clear enough to understand if you've studied at A1-A2 level. I only wish it was longer. Not really for people younger than college age, but perfect for high school grads and up.

I think that my German student, who is twelve years old and has only been learning German for two years thoroughly enjoyed the stories in the book. They are funny and therefore make learning easy and enjoyable. All in all, a great book to use for teaching beginner German.

This a great book for working on German vocabulary and reading skill. I definitely recommend it for quick reading sessions. The stories are interesting and not overly complicated.

Fun With Hieroglyphs is a great way to get an education on ancient Egyptian writings. This book tells the history of hieroglyphics and goes on to identify actual symbols used in the writings on walls and in art work of the Egyptians. Charts are presented that identify the sounds of each symbol. I found it very interesting that when you see a picture of someone on a hieroglyphic, the way the person is facing is the way you would read the writing: if the person is facing left, then that is how to read that particular piece, from left to right. There is a lot of information in this nicely presented book. It is easy to read and understand and it has a variety of exercises that help you learn the symbols. Also interesting are the writings on tombs - the Egyptians wanted to make sure they had everything they needed on their journey beyond so on their tombs are lists of things they needed most in the afterlife. You can look at actual photos of tombs and learn to read them. If they wanted a particular bird such as an owl or other animal, often they were depicted without wings, or legs to keep the animal from running or flying away.My daughter is in 6th grade and they are studying ancient civilizations. This is a great book for understanding how the ancients used their writings, many of which have lasted for centuries. You can also make your own hieroglyphic messages for others to decipher with the included rubber stamps and ink!

What a super product! It is a book-box: in the box there is a set of stamps with the 24 hieroglyphs that represent sounds, and there is also a small book with just the right amount of information for a child about the alphabet, the language, the Rosetta stone, and some puzzles to decipher. I learned so much with this book! I am so glad I bought it for my daughter. She is very interested in Egypt, loves puzzles, and break the code games. It is simply perfect for her.Note: the ink is on the dry side... I will probably buy some stamping ink at some point in time. Some reviewer complaint about the size of the stamps. I think they are just fine: they are for writing! My child has smaller stamps from when she was younger. They are about a quarter size each.

Love the idea behind this but the quality of the ink pad absolutely stinks! It is SO thin and certainly would not live up to a classroom of children all having a turn! The stamps themselves are cheap quality but if inked correctly and pressed down hard do make a good impression. Our children enjoyed writing their names and creating a secret message.SO what's the book like? After starting with an introduction it moves on to talk about the hieroglyph alphabet. It then lists the alphabet in English, along with the hieroglyph and the sound it is used for. Some letters have more than one hieroglyph attached to them depending on the sound being made. Throughout the book there are puzzles quizzing you on what you have just read. Answers are provided in the back. How about the orientation? What is a cartouche? Several helpful phrases are provided so you can send your own secret messages. Learn how to count with hieroglyphs, about the scribes and the paper they wrote on. Of course no book on hieroglyphs would be complete without the mention of the Rosetta Stone which comes towards the end of this book.SO despite the poor quality of the ink pad I still recommend this book if you are studying Ancient Egypt as it allows children to actually practice what they have learned.

This kit looked like so much fun, but sadly the stamps were of very poor quality with shallow images and warped rubber making it impossibleto get a clean imprint. The accompanying book was lovely, but we bought the kit for the stamps. On another note, we purchased some papyrus to use with the stamps, but it is too rough to accept a stamp very well, so if this is your goal, choose a stencil.

This was really neat. It has a book to explain the history of hieroglyphs as well as cartouches. It comes with ink too. My problem is that the first time we used it, one of the stamp pieces broke off completely from the handle. I'd love it more if it lasted for several projects, rather than breaking minutes into using them.

Great gift for teens and adults developed by the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art. The 50-page book (8.5 inches x 8.5 in.) includes several chapters on reading, writing, counting, and pronunciation with hieroglyphs. Comes with 24 rubber stamp hieroglyphs and an ink pad to use in writing sentences. You may need to buy a second ink pad or ink refill at your local stationery store; my pad was dry.

These are nice quality stamps to add to your curriculum. These can be shared in a group but I used them with individual students with great results. Perfect for those who are tactile learners, visual learners or have an attention deficit disorder like my son.

I had purchased this set a LONG time ago but it got lost in a messy divorce. Was very pleased to find it again. Love being able to spell out things in hieroglyphs :)

I needed something that would be a simple introduction to Egyptian dialect and this is just the right purchase as I wanted to introduce it to my granddaughter who is learning Hieroglyphs in school.
