#24,130 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

If you love the AMC TV show TURN: Washington's Spies, you'll love this non-fiction account of the same topic. I know the show was actually created from Alexander Rose's history book "Washington's Spies: The Story of America's First Spy Ring" but they were both on sale on Kindle and I couldn't decide so I just got both and wound up reading this one first. And honestly, I'm not sure how or why the show claims to be based on a non-fiction book when a non-fiction book is factual... so really, it's just based on history, and this is also a non-fictional book about that history.I honestly had no idea just how important espionage was during the Revolutionary War. When I thought of this topic, I thought of what I learned in school: founding fathers, minutemen, Paul Revere, etc. But now I know it's so much more than that, and there was so much more going on in the background. They don't teach this in schools, but they should, maybe kids would pay attention.Never boring or dry, this book really pulls you into the spy ring and let's you get to know each individual involved. At the end, it also explores who female agent 355 might have been. Sometimes, it's so juicy, I can't believe it really happened. It was interesting to compare and contrast it with the show too, which did add some fictional elements and make some changes, but not so much that it draws away from the real history, which makes me love the show even more. This is precisely the kind of history book I would recommend to people who (wrongly) think history is boring, but it's also thrilling for those who already appreciate history. I don't think I've ever blown through non-fiction this fast.

Amazing! This book reads like a thriller, and is even more thrilling because it's not fiction! Not only is it a fantastic way to absorb American history- it's one for all ages! I'm a home schooling mother of three (a twelve year old and two teens) who has just added it to required reading for the year! This is a must read- even for people who love history but hate to read!

First I would like to say that I started reading this book Saturday morning and finished it Sunday night. It was really fun to read. The reason I give it only a three star review is that is not exactly a scholarly work (no footnotes, for example) so I was left with a sense of wondering about the veracity of everything in the book. I imagine there are other books about the Washington spies and this book has made me curious enough to read another account. I have to chuckle at all the 1 star reviews. Virtually all of them protest to the book because of the author, Brian Kilmeade. I did not know the author was a commentator for Fox News until I read those reviews. Impugning a history book simply because of the political views of the author is inane. George Washington's Secret Six is not a book espousing a political agenda of some sort, as these reviewers would have one believe. Another reason for the 3 star is that it was a rather bit over-priced given content. In any event, if you know little about the spy ring, this is as good a place to start as any.

There's been over 3300 reviews written on this title by fellow Amazon members. So there's not much new that I can add to this book except my full recommendation that you read it.Washington has been pushed out of New York City with grand defeats and loss of great property that he could ill afford. He creates his winter quarters at Morristown, NJ. Supplies to sustain his Army as well as critical information as to what the British are up to in New York City are two critical bits of information he must be aware of just to survive to fight another day.Where does the enemy plan to strike come Spring 1777? What is their strength. Any new deployments and if so, where? Who is still in command and what is the enemy's troop strength? When do they plan to march on Philadelphia. What about their Southern campaign. How secure is his own Army and Congress in terms of gathering and protecting sensitive information?Lot's of questions that George needed answered and couldn't read about in the local newspapers. Washington had proof that his ranks had been infiltrated by spies, so turnabout was fair play. The Culpepper Spy Ring was created in New York City in and around1776. The ring was composed of very common people, 5 men and one woman. They had jobs that would fit into the city and no direct any undue attention to their positions. Their jobs allowed them to listen to and even infiltrate the homes of the British in subservient rolls. While Washington and his army were floundering in New Jersey, the one war he stood a chance of winning was that of words and ideas. This ring of spies was his formal entrance into the world of espionage. It is interesting to read of the many challenges facing both nations and the interpersonal relationships that his spies were able to develop. The old adage that lose lips sink ships worked on both sides of this contest .But the information that this new unit was able to accumulate became an important part of the Colonial overall strategy. This is a well written and very interesting book.

Let me start by saying I really wanted to like this book, because the story of Washington's spy network is so compelling. But I read history, rather than historical novels, and this book reads like a novel. For example: "The taper on the wax candle atop Knowlton's desk a little as tiny flecks of ash fell onto the wood; otherwise, the room was silent." (page 22) Or: "Washington had smiled a little, in spite of himself, as he closed the letter with greetings sent to his sister-in-law and her children." How could Kilmeade know such details? He couldn't, so he made them up. Worse, he repeats the grade-school story of drunk Hessians at Trenton, which has been thoroughly debunked by true historians. I didn't read past chapter three, choosing instead to read an actual history of the subject.
