Unless you have been a liveaboard,,,no one else really gets it¡ It becomes a way of life. To this day, 9 years later, living on land, i still think about my stern swinging as i go around corners driving a car; place someones drink safely on a table so that it wont slide off; stand with an equalizing boaters stance for balance, unknowingly. goes on and on. When you are out there, there is no Out There that no one knows really where you are. Like Little Red Riding Hood, cant hellp but to leave crumbs behind in your wake...besides boats move¡¡¡ keep in touch¡ help one another¡ It is a community unto itself...the Robinsons are still new at boating, party, party, party. I have lived aboard for 20 years. Alot of that is distructive and gets old very quickly. But, aside from the problems with haulouts, M.T. Heads, it is a life unexplainable of freedom, beauty, learning, self reliance. Alot of the news articles etc. did not make sense and didnt make the book flow or express the purpose of living aboard. Some extremely funny definitions¡ Some very good laff out load experiences¡ A fun, easy read...........brings back some of the memories from the Bildge to the Bridge that i experienced over the years and sometimes tend to have forgotten. As a woman captain back in the 80s, 90s, etc...even more experiences in a macho world....Capt. C.
As a former live-a-board, (I lived on a 44' Wellington motor sailer for 3 years,) I can relate to the author Ed Robinson. He chunked it all and moved aboard a 38' trawler. He has written several books most of which are fiction, but his book Poop, Booze, and Bikinis is full of the things we live-a-boards have all experienced. A little rough with reference to descriptions, but so true.Even if you have never lived on a boat but enjoy boating you will get a kick out of this book.
The first book by Ed was serious in content: Save your money, sell everything, and go live on a boat.It is also a lighthearted and funny story of Ed and Kim's journey to Punta Gorda Florida and the home they found in a 35 foot cruiser they named "Leap Of Faith"You might think the journey ends in a completely successful manner. Not so fast my friend, there are new challenges. Yet after all is said and done, the challenges Ed and Kim now face are minor, humorous, and will make you smile and laugh.Ed writes about those challenges in this book, and it sure is funny!Poop, Booze, and Bikinis addresses these new challenges, pokes a little fun at others, and will leave you wanting to drive to Florida and see what it is all about.
This is a hilarious view of the water world of South Florida from the deck of a boat. Along with the many laughs, I picked up some valuable tidbits about boat life that Travis McGee never mentioned. As a follow-on to the author’s first book, LEAP OF FAITH-QUIT YOUR JOB AND LIVE ON A BOAT, he goes into more detail about what he cherishes and dislikes about playing the friendly pirate. I could see myself on the deck of that boat, cold drink in hand, watching those sunsets. The author reminds me of Dave Barry in his low-key and humor-laden descriptions of sea life, boats and boat neighbors. I loved it.
Honestly, I liked Ed's first book "Leap of Faith". This one? Meh. Poorly written, and for the most part it's a recycling of cheesy jokes. It feels like he threw something together over a weekend without much thought. Typos and misspellings all over the place, on the Kindle version at least. You could Google "sailing jokes" and read for two hours around the internet and get most of what's here. I got a few chuckles, but wouldn't spend the money again.
No, it's not an in-depth detail of everything you need to know about sailing, but it IS a funny, entertaining short read on some of the less talked about things having to do with sailing. Things like "you have to haul and dispose of your own poop" and some interesting stories about misadventures. It's a lighthearted easy to read book that was a nice break from some of the more weighty issues in life. I'd recommend it to a friend, for sure.
Ed is a bit of all right! If his intent was to write for guys who are sitting on the boat on Sunday afternoon, too tired to clean, maintain, fix, fish, or futz around with the boat and just want a beer and something funny to read, then he hit his mark. Not a masterpiece, but who wants a stupid masterpiece when you are trying to relax. Also everything he says is correct as it needs to be including the stuff he just made up. Well done, sir.
This book started story time on our boat....I was quietly reading to myself one day on the lake after buying this book, and after the 5th or 6th time (within the first chapter or 2) I had to stop, and explain to my husband why I was cracking up to myself, I just turned back to the first page and started reading out loud so we could enjoy it together. It now stays on our boat like the boating bible.
