"If you want to see Tokyo through a snazzy set of new glasses, or you're a Japan pop culture geek in Tokyo wondering what you might be missing, this book is a must-have — for your bag, not your shelf." —Japan Visitor"The book is filled with pictures which help to capture the experience for those that have not been to Japan, and they do a very good job. Even though it's been almost 20 years since I've been those pictures instantly brought back memories of seeing the shops and the women dressed up in anime-inspired outfits trying to get you into the stores. Overall, a very well-laid out book for those anime fans who will be traveling to Japan." —Absolute Anime blog"Tokyo Geek's Guide is a book that can be enjoyed by all kinds of people. Fans of Japanese culture will benefit from the guide for its images and relevant information even if they're not planning to visit the country…the book is also quite hard to put down." —The Daily Fandom"Tokyo Geek's Guide is highly recommended both for first-time visitors and lifers alike. My son the anime-fan is going to love this book!

If you have a crush on the manga/anime world, you need this guide in your life. From historical background to super-detailed info on stores/museum/cafe you'll find everything to have a great otaku experience in Tokyo.

An outstanding guide to all you need to know in Tokyo's rich geek culture. So many excellent photos and a clear insightful text from a writer who has first hand experience. A+++++

My 12 y/o received this as a gift. She really enjoys browsing the different recommendations, tips, and general information.

My friend Gianni and co-author of Made of This, also available on Amazon, has created a lavishly illustrated and fun to read guide to stuff I never understood before that's liked by those crazy kids today. Entering this book was like going on an armchair anthropological trip, complete with bright, eye-catching photos and Gianni's conversational writing style. He's very good about explaining foreign -- also meant in more ways than one -- art, pursuits, and enthusiasms. It turns out some pretty wild doings take place in the Ikebukuro eateries (that business with the chocolate-coated biscuit sticks), but they got nothing on Shinjuku's Capcom Bar and its Brain Cake. And wow ... the lights of Akihabara. For page-flipping fun and for actionable info about where to go / what to do, this is a fabulous book.

Way back in 1999 I was fortunate enough to visit Japan, which was like a dream come true (as it would be for most anime fans who have never been). While there my friend and I walked around Ahkihabra and looked in a lot of the shops, which was truly exciting. But oh, if only we had a book like this Tokyo Geek's Guide to lead us to the must-see shops of Ahkihabra and take us to all the other areas of which we never even knew existed. Most of the book is dedicated to telling about different areas of Japan that anime geeks would like to visit and detailing the different stores in those areas that are worth visiting. It not only tells you what they have, such as toys, anime, videogames, etc., but also how to get get there and what days and times they're open for business. Of course, as it states in the book, all these details are subject to change at anytime and it's very possible that some of the stores mentioned will no longer exist when you find yourself in the area. The guide covers a lot of stores, though, so even if a few don't exist or happen to be closed, you will be sure to find others nearby, and the guide describes how to get there from whatever store you're currently at in book.It doesn't just detail stores, either, it also tells about cosplay events that you can check out or even participate in if you're so inclined. It gives information about what's required for participation and what's not allowed for the specific events. The book also includes a few interviews, which were interesting and entertaining, and I feel the book could benefit from adding more of those. The book is filled with pictures which help to capture the experience for those that have not been to Japan, and they do a very good job. Even though it's been almost 20 years since I've been those pictures instantly brought back memories of seeing the shops and the women dressed up in anime-inspired outfits trying to get you into the stores. The book is also filled with maps to help you navigate and provides the Japanese spelling of names so you'll be able to find the stores you're looking for.Overall, a very well-laid out book for those anime fans who will be traveling to Japan. For those who have no plans it can be a bit tough to read about all these shops you won't be seeing.Introduction: Tokyo: The Geek Capital of the WorldChapter 1: Akihabara and JimbochoChapter 2: Harajuku, Shibuya and Shimo-KitazawaChapter 3: Shinjuku, Nakano and West TokyoChapter 4: IkebukuroChapter 5: Roppongi and OdaibaChapter 6: Other Otaku Hot Spots

The author has a decades long background as a devoted creator of fanzines on peculiar themes (mail art, fringe publications, cultural oddities), his research is very accurate and almost obsessive in terms of details, so he was the ideal person to compile this guide of the various cultural phenomena rotating around Tokyo, a city where he resides and that he has explored for a quarter of a century. Very recommended.

This is a great guide leading you into the real Japanese otaku culture. While reading it I felt I was breathing the exact atmosphere I used to breath when I was in Tokyo. The author perfectly describes places and scenes both through words well-written and amazing photographs.I strongly recommend Tokyo Geek's Guide to anyone interested in a deeper insight into one of the most fascinating aspect of Japanese modern culture.
