This book was amazing! It was short and included many details about Steve Jobs. What surprised me the most was the fact that he was so poor and then became a billionaire. "Steve couldn't pay for college". "Steve Jobs was a success- a big success. He wasn't a millionaire anymore. He was a billionaire." Steve Jobs has showed me that it doesn't matter where you come from, you can be a success. That a poor child can go from having no money to becoming one of the richest and youngest men alive.

My 11 year old daughter loves this book. She also likes the others in the series, but she really loves this one. Its cool that she understands the background behind all the Apple devices she is using. She really embraced the idea that Steve Jobs did not invent any of the technologies, he just made them practical, and more importantly, fun to use. She said she thought she knew a lot about Jobs before reading the book, but she really didn't know much at all. She was amazed in the amount of interesting facts about his life. She talked about Jobs for about 3 days straight after reading it.

This book was very informative and interesting but it seemed focused primarily on transfusions. While that is fascinating and it provides a nice overview of the development of this process, I wanted more. I was really invested in the early chapters where they talked about managing the physical aspects of transfusions (from better equipment to blood typing and the chemistry to store blood and keep it from clotting) and started to lose interest in the middle when it went on and on about plasma products. It picked up again at the end a bit more (and all that plasma product talk became more relevant) when it went into the spread of hepatitis and AIDS.What I would have liked to see was more about blood itself and not just its byproducts and use in transfusions, but information about how it became so widely used to test so many things in the body and when they started using these tests, how that fit in with the overall history we were being given. We're given a little info on testing related to AIDS and hepatitis but not to other diseases that can be determined by a blood test or other levels of things in the blood that can tell us about our health. Likewise we are told about the evolution of transfusion equipment but not about basic phlebotomy practices (switching from syringes to the evacuated tube system for example). I'd also like to read about the use of blood in forensics; how viable the samples they get are and how much they can learn from them. But the book focuses singularly on transfusions and blood products as if this is all we've ever done with blood, without even a passing mention to other branches of development.

The author takes an incredible journey through the history of blood. You will be amazed at how key experiments throughout the years have forever changed out feelings towards the tissue we call blood. You will root "for the good guys" as they pioneer medical research! But then you will cry when you see what modern business do once they got a hold of blood as a "product." You will see how greed,jealosy, and denial killed thousands and ruined the lives of many others. All because companies and some doctors would not listen to reason. Truly heartbreaking indeed.The author composes a beautiful symphony of history which is very easy to read and very difficult to put down. This book has certainly changed the way I think about business and medicine.

The reporter does a great job of giving us a history of blood transfusions from the earliest days to the present. The components of blood can be used for so many different products and who knew they the U.S. supplies the world with Plasma.All about the emotional and political implications of blood donation.

As someone that has worked in the blood resource industry (in both non-profit community blood banking and for-profit source plasma collection companies) since the mid 90's, I find this book to be extremely valuable. I have been sharing copies with people new to the industry, particularly those managing new facilities, since 2001. I've reread this book at least once a year and glean new information each time through. It's a very powerful piece and reaffirms the need for a quality mindset in day to day aspects of operations.

An in depth look at the history of blood and blood product transfusion, I find "Blood" to be fascinating. Having worked in health care I have some knowledge, but this is a whole new perspective. Great read.

Ordered this for my sister, a nurse, and she loves it. Great, competitive price.

About the Author

Senator John McCain entered the Naval Academy in June of 1954 and served in the United States Navy until 1981. He was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives from Arizona in 1982 and to the Senate in 1986. The Republican Party’s nominee for president in the 2008 election, McCain was also the author of Faith of My Fathers, Worth the Fighting For, Why Courage Matters, Character Is Destiny, Hard Call, Thirteen Soldiers, and The Restless Wave. John McCain died in 2018.  Mark Salter is the author, with John McCain, of several books, including Faith of My Fathers and The Restless Wave. This book shares more than 30 inspiring lessons in essay form that are exceptionally well-written. Each essay centers on a famous individual and a word that he or she encompasses. There are words to live by from Authenticity, Compassion, Confidence, and Courage to Forgiveness, Resilience, Responsibility, and Selflessness & Contentment. The stories are interesting and all offer a history lesson as well as interesting insights about a wide variety of characters. The individuals included are usual suspects such as Mother Teresa, Gandhi, Abraham Lincoln, and Mark Twain as well as others worth noting including Tecumseh, Wilma Rudolph, and Maximilian Kolbe.My favorite words are those from John McCain in his Afterword:"...All you have to do is become less selfish on the way out than you were coming in...It takes strength, not physical strength, but moral strength, the strength to sacrifice for an idea. It takes understanding and wisdom and a mind that questions beliefs and conventions that the heart suspects are false. And it takes love, love for something greater than yourself, love that is much more than desire or affection. A marvelous, inspirational biography covering more than than 30 individuals, some well known and others lesser known. The readers for this book include the young and adults. The biography for individuals is short, mostly slightly over 10 pages per person. But the selections are just superb, reflecting the character of Senator McCain fairly well. Highly recommended.

I bought this book after reading The Restless Wave because I liked how it was written plus all the fascinating people he knew and met. So this book, Character is Destiny is thought-provoking and stimulating; so many, many fabulous people!!The stories are short enough to give the reader a good overview of the person. It caused me to continue to research many of them to know more, to look for more books about them.I highly recommend this book. It would have been one we would have read together as a family if I had obtained it years ago.It is a great book for homeschooling families. It would be excellent to use in conjunction with other curriculum that reinforces positive character traits.

These are wonderful glimpses into a number and variety of people who, in their own ways, have contributed to the well-being of the nations. Well written and certainly appropriate to these times, it gives one hope for the world.

These true stories are thoughtfully told, and are compelling & inspiring. We are thankful for the honorable character of the now late John McCain for blessing us all with this beautiful and moving book.

I liked the simplicity of this book. I am not in to the scientific parts of the lightroom. I like the process, but I am more excited about the finished product than the journey along the way. This book helped to simplify some things that I could not grasp on my own. Like!

I was very pleased when I read this book. I've always believed its quality not quantity. The book is written so everyone can read it and understand its message. There is nothing more frustrating than having to read and re-read something until you understand the message. To many authors try to be so technical, to impress everyone of their knowledge of the subject, that, they loose their audience. Not here, the information is precise and easy to read and understand.This book gets right to the point allowing the reader to immediately apply the information presented. We want more books like this.

I recently purchased 3 books by the same author, Edward Bailey, called, "Photoshop for Photographers", "Photoshop Lightroom: 17 Tips You Should Know", and the 2nd volume companion "Photoshop Adobe Lightroom: 20 Lightroom Lifesaver Tips!". These were all advertised by the author as for the absolute beginner, easy instructions on how to get started in Lightroom and Photoshop CC. These all had very good reviews. I couldn't believe it when I saw the 3 books arrive, they looked like little pamphlets! All three of these books are an absolute waste of money, they do no show you as a beginner ANYTHING about learning the basics of the two programs. Zero instruction on the basics of the programs, no pictures, nothing. In fact, it's even mentioned in the "books" that the author thanks you for "downloading"; that's the format these books by this author should have stayed at, a cheap download. The prices of these books are also a joke, I wouldn't pay more than $5 for all three of them. The "tips" are just disjointed little fragments of what the programs could do. Instead, I found "The Adobe Photoshop Lightroom CC Book for Digital Photographers" by Scott Kelby at Barnes & Noble. At 576 pages for only $27.49 (compared to over $57 for the pamphlets by Edward Bailey), it's the only book you'll need to learn Lightroom and Photoshop especially as an absolute beginner, and you won't get ripped off by what people are trying to pass of as "books" these days instead.

I like learning the kind of tricks that professionals use. I knew a few of these, but I found a good amount of tips that will work well for what I do. I'm really looking forward to using them.
