Gabrielle Douglas is a two-time Olympic gold medalist. As an older woman, Gabrielle Douglas story inspires and deeply touches me. I remember watching her with such rapt attention and admiration during the summer Olympics and reminiscing how nearly 20 years earlier, I watched Dominique Dawes with the same feelings. Amazing! Nearly two years later, I tune in to watch the Lifetime biopic and my eyes start to tear up as before the opening. Teary-eyed and proud, I made it through the biopic. And now, with her memoir, I am awarded the opportunity to dive deeper into her story. Fortunately, I read her memoir on my Kindle so my tears did not cause any damage. This is an truly inspirational story. It saddens me that young minority women have to endure any form of racism but as I think about it the Civil Rights Movement occurred in 1960s after 200 years of slavery and a systemized form of oppression. A lot of prejudice and racial bias is still buried deep. Alas, what does not kill you makes you stronger. I am glad that Gabrielle is receiving all the accolades as it is well deserved. I hope her story continues to inspire minority girls to enroll in gymnastics and I hope they pay special attention on the backlash Gabby receives and how well she handles it.

My husband bought this book for our daughter for Christmas. Our daughter has done competitive gymnastics since age 6 and is now 11 years old. A lot of hours, intense training and effort goes into this sport and the fact that our daughter misses out on a lot of things that other kids her age gets to do comes up sometimes. This book is a great read and realization for anyone considering the sport or currently in gymnastics that will open the eyes to the fact that the road to success is not always easy, but as the great Napoleon Hill said, “Whatever the mind can conceive and believe, it can achieve.”

Aside from them, readers also get a look into her family life. As a single mother, Douglas's mother works hard to support her daughter's dream, financially and mentally. Also included is a brief look at Gabby's father, who has been absent for much of her life.This is an inspirational novel. Everyone saw Gabby's performance at the Olympics, but in this novel, readers get a glimpse of the real Gabby Douglas: an American teenager who happens to enjoy gymnastics. One thing that I enjoyed about this novel was that it sounds like a teenager wrote it. Normally, this would usually be a bad thing, but in this case, it's not. After all, Gabby Douglas is a teenager, and it made the novel much more personal.I recommend this novel to anyone who enjoys the Olympics, gymnastics, or just loves a great story!

This book is a story of triumph over adversity, and how even a little girl in a disadvantaged home can have a big dream come true. Gabrielle is mature far beyond her years (she had to be), and still she is a little girl with big dreams and a love for fun. The book just keeps surprising as she faces one set-back after another. Just when it looks like she can't miss--her own problem with home sickness nearly does her in. She has a wonderful support team that helps her pull through. Her mother and her siblings just keeps giving her the inspiration to reach higher and higher. It seems like a novel, and yet it is real-life, and big dreams do come true. This book will inspire a lot of little girls to "go for the gold". And, if they have Gabrielle's faith...they can.

I think she is a great leader to the next generation of gymnasts. It's not an easy sport. Having people to look up to is a big deal. Gymnastics hold some of my BEST childhood memories and a few of the most crazy ones too. It's more of a mentally-tough spiritual path than just a sport. She has put a little of the meaningfulness inside the secret-planet sort-of world of a tumbler into words anyone can journey there with.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book - it was truly inspirational and something that any age group can learn from. This young lady is very grounded, which shows me that both her families worked as one to keep her focused and on the right track. All the people in her life regardless of the circumstances played a role, some more so than others, but the end result is fantastic. I believe there is much more for this teen as she keeps her eyes focused on her faith and truly revel in the unconditional love of both her families.

I got this book last year and I read it in a few day. It was such a great story about who Gabrielle Douglas was and what her journey was like. It really gives the reader inside look at her life. She is a colorful, expressive writer which makes it a pleasure to read. There are some great pictures inside the book as well and the book cover itself on the back is a poster of her. I'd recommend it to anyone who wants an inspiring read!

Excellent book! Purchased for my 9 year old who loves Gabby Douglas but ended up reading it myself all in one day before she could even start it. Amazing book that gives you a behind the scenes picture of what life was like for Gabby growing up and how hard she had to fight to get to where she is now.

A rather rambling discourse with peppered references all over the show and well out of sequence with the illustrations. He has sparse analytical comment on the reproductions and more discursive comment for the history of the period of the illuminations. Not so much about the Bedford Hours as such, but much mo re about the artistic background of the period. Less disappointment would be incurred if the title more accurately reflected the commentary. Blind Harry and Pasty Pete assisted with the coloured reproductions.

Eberhard Konig, the author of this attractive book, wrote the commentary for the the Swiss facsimile edition of the Bedford Hours. The price of this limited edition is around $17000! For a much more modest investment, this issue will give the reader a good idea of the highlights of this renowned manuscript.The Bedford Hours was produced in the first decades of the fifteenth century, the same era as the Limbourg brothers were active. Despite the illuminator's prolific and high quality output, his true identity is unknown.Konig's text is unfalingly interesting and informative. The book is richly illustrated, often with full page reproductions. Given the modest price of this publication it might be churlish to be overly critical of the quality of the pages as reproduced. There is a certain harshness and unnaturalness in the colors; this is not serious and the reader will gain a reasonable impression of what the original looks like. Alternatively there are copies of the $17000 limited edition still available!

I am an enthusiatic amatuer lover of illuminated manuscripts. I found this book to be both lovely and informative. However, it suffers from one serious flaw - the various plates and illustations are not supplied with figure number references. They identify the images - both those from the Bedford Hours manuscript itself and those from other manuscripts with which the Bedford Hours images are being compared - by listing the manuscript and the folio number for that manuscript - but not with a unique figure number for this book itself. That means that when the text begins discussing an image, you have to hunt through the book in order to look at the picture. This is difficult enough when the image is on a near-by page, but if the text and image are separated widely (which happens often if an image is discussed in more than one part of the text), it is enough to make one extremely exasperated. For example, the Adam and Eve/Paradise minuature is discussed first on page 57, but the image is reproduced on page 91! This seems to be a serious editorial failure. That said, this is no reason to pass up this book - its comparison of the minatures in this manuscript with other examples by the same Bedford Master in other manuscripts and also by other artists is very instructive. But just be prepared to keep a firm grip on your temper as you search for the pictures.

Let me first state with what lens I read this book-- I am an African American female K-12 teacher, with 32 years experience in a predominantly while public school. More importantly, I am a graduate of this predominantly white school district where busing was used to integrate the schools AND a graduate of Penn State University in the era of their being forced to increase minority enrollment and divest funds from South Africa. I read this book as part of my school faculty summer book club. I haven't read a book of this nature in MANY YEARS. I truly believe this 11 chapter book could have been easily written in much fewer chapters. As a scholarly work the authors premise was given and explained very well in the beginning of the book and as a read it just continued to speak about the various studies that proved the same point. The main idea of value that I gained from this book came in chapter 9 when the author surmised that "Interestingly, top-down decision making with stress on basic skills didn't work well in these schools." (The schools were low income in California where students have one or another ability-stereotyped identities.) The authors conclusions that stereotype identities have a definite impact on the success of various identity groups.

I loved this book, and have already passed my copy on to others at work. It is chock-full of stories and study results that paint a very powerful story of racism and sexism in our society - including the impact of societal messages on our internal psyches. The story from the title grabbed me immediately, for example.And while it discusses many academic studies, each one is presented in a context that makes them very intimate and impactful. It does not read like an overview of studies. It reads like a narrative of one person's journey through his lifetime. I would recommend it.

I found this a well written, engaging expose -with realistic solutions-on how and why some women and minorities have failed to be the best they can be in traditional American educational and workplace systems. Claude Steele's recommended, mind shift for educators and the workplace and his mentoring suggestions are put forth in a way the audience can hear it, think about it , and employ corrective actions that can make a difference for minority youth, women and others with non mainstream cultural histories. This is an great academic piece of work. At the same time, research solutions are not the answer to every problem regarding inequality. I think Claude Steele's suggestions are most effective in large systems and may not be as effective in individual relationships where people are misunderstanding each other. The other thing, an elephant in the academic and employment living room is an honest discussion of how social class experience affects educational and professional success. We should be looking at social class in addition to race-appearance issues.

This book carefully and convincingly builds an evidenced-based argument for how societal stereotypes, and the fears we all have of confirming negative stereotypes about our own social group, can affect how we behave and, most importantly, how we perform on crucial tasks. Steele demonstrates convincingly that some of the standard advice that members of disadvantaged groups receive (often from parents), such as to just work harder, can actually be detrimental. He also shows that comparatively small changes in institutional settings, or in how tasks or challenging situations are presented, can largely or entirely eliminate the stereotype threat and its impact on performance. I found the book inspiring, and I know it will change the way that I present tasks and feedback to students and family members. As a social scientist, I was extremely impressed by the way Steele and his colleagues at several institutions have built this research program, one small increment a time, resulting in a revolutionary whole.Given the emphasis in this book on pre-exam treatments and institutional interventions (having test-takers identify their gender AFTER an Advanced Placement exam, for instance), I couldn't help wondering if there are techniques that individuals can use for themselves. Cognitive therapy, after all, works not the basis of individuals' changing their self-talk, abandoning counterproductive beliefs, etc. If an individual can learn to, for example, care less about what other people think or be less worried about social embarrassment, can stereotype threats be reduced? One finding mentioned in the book is that if a white person is prompted to view a social interaction with a black person as a learning experience, the white person is less likely to engage in avoidance behaviors that are based on fear of saying the wrong thing. What if the "treatment" isn't a prompt from an experimenter, but a deliberate change in thinking on the part of individuals faced with identity contingencies?

One of the most influential books I've ever read. Engaging and well written, while academic and though provoking. If you are an educator, or in any public service field I highly recomend this, and if you just want to become a more thoughtful member of society I do too. Perfect sketchbook for 13 yo kiddo who is a doodle fanatic/budding artist! The book is durable, and the sketch paper is of good quality. I love the colorful cover, and affordable price!

Very unhappy! The photo makes it Look like it had gold, it does not. It's more like yellow spots. Just disappointed With this purchase.

This cover is a photograph of the dots and the photograph is not even good. It’s pixelated and looks terrible and cheap. I thought it would be real gold foil polka dots. This item should be at a dollar store.

Bit flimsy, but nice for the price

Like others mentioned, it looks like the front cover was printed from another image. Resulted in a low quality image. Not a bother to my 10 year old, but I value the money I pay for things for her and I was not pleased with this.

The book was just what I needed for an add on to a gift. The cover is soft so if you want something a little more steady this is not that but my 12 year old niece loved it.

Paper is thick for sketching

I have used Frommer's travel books for many, many years; they have been my favorite and most reliable guides. Planning a trip to Australia and New Zealand in 2020, I pre-ordered this book months ago and eagerly awaited its arrival. The parts of Australia it covers, I think it covers well...Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Great Barrier Reef, etc...the main tourist areas. My complaint is that is has no information...NO information...on the less mainstream, but still visit-worthy parts of Australia. I don't expect this guide to cover every small town and village, but what about Perth? The entirety of Western Australia is omitted. I am looking into taking The Ghan from Adelaide to Darwin so I wanted some information on Adelaide. As the state capital of South Australia, it isn't even mentioned! To properly represent itself, this guide should be called "Parts of Australia." First Frommer's guide ever (and I have dozens) that I have been disappointed in. Ordering the Lonely Planet book now to supplement the excellent Eyewitness Guide.

I agree with the other review. This book is not Australia 2019, it is Australia 2019 without Western Australia & South Australia. I feel totally ripped off. I now have to buy an addition travel book to cover those sections of the country. Please name the book correctly!!!! It is not complete

As per the other reviews, this guide covers only a portion of Oz and is by no means a "Complete Guide". Unfortunately, we'd already started highlighting places we want to visit before discovering that it only covers 1/2 of our itinerary. Otherwise, it would be going back to Amazon. Frommer's experts may "know every corner of Australia" but they sure haven't written about Western Australia in this edition.

This book was pretty much useless to us. It did not even mention some of places we visited and when it did, it spent way too much time going over places to stay and eat (which you can easily find on the internet) rather than focusing on things to see. We ended up leaving it somewhere along the way. Not worth carrying.

Good read and handy size for travel.

This reviewer is pleased to see Vincent R. Lee's incredible tale not only made it to Amazon.com (very fitting location) but there is a Kindle edition as well. In the past I could only refer friends to his website. I first heard of Vincent R. Lee when we read from his book sitting in our dinner tent each night high up in the Andes Mountains as our friend who was not only inspired by the book, she loved the book; and thus she created our trek based on his book. We met Juvenal Cobos, Vince's campesino before I owned or read the book in its entirety.As the author cites in the introduction to this edition of his book change has occurred in the intervening years making the exploration he did more accessible to the average Joe. Unknown to our group of seven we were a bit of the guinea pigs as our friend was helping her Peruvian friends put together a guide business.It is not only a well written book about the history of the Incas; it is an engaging Indiana Jones' type adventure tale with a cast of characters jockeying to be the next great Hiram Bingham type hero. We all see the world in different ways and it is with Lee's architect eyes that solves the mystery and puzzle as to the last stronghold of the Incas. It's a fascinating part of the story. This author is a gracious man, a tenacious man, a man of high integrity and while I am not seeing his dedication in my Kindle edition in my hardback copy Lee acknowledged the incredible journey he took was a result of a "promise to Tupac Amaru", the last member of the royal Inca family to rule Peru.While describing himself as ..."a lifelong skeptic in all matters supernatural..." Lee found out as I did there is a powerful spirit essence in the Andes, in the ruins of the Incas and in the stones. Coming off our fifteen day trek I had a spiritual moment with a spiritual message that did not make sense to me until I got back and read Lee's book. I realized the message was for him. And as with all things spiritual they have a strange way of moving the plot forward and so only a few months after returning I unexpectedly ended up in his corner of the world, dropped in on him and his wonderful wife; and delivered said spiritual message.Now I will read his latest edition (in my Kindle) and see if he heeded said spiritual message.A modest man (it's not in this book), Lee also proposed what technique the Incas likely used to make their walls earthquake proof and NOVA did a program on that in 1995 showing Lee's hypothesis is the best one to date on that question.I hope the author will get his other papers and books up on Amazon especially on Kindle so that his work is easily accessible to all.Enjoy the ride. And yes, having met the author he could definitely pass for Indiana Jones' cousin. Smiley face here.

If you are thinking to go, this book is must reading. If you are looking for a tale of adventure and discovery in South America this is it.

Really liked this book. Makes me want to go back to Peru and go a little farther from Cusco. Only limitation, is that all of the drawings do not appear to be in the Kindle version. The ones that appear are small and you can't resize them (at least not on my entry level Kindle). Otherwise, 5 stars.

A fascinating story written with grace and scholarship. I thought I knew something of this history, but I learned a lot.

Forgotten Vilcabamba: Final Stronghold of the Incas is a narrative of Vincent R Lee's detective work into finding the Incas final stronghold. Many to this day have believed it to be the famed Machu Picchu, which Vincent R. Lee shows it was not. Forgotten Vilcabamba: Final Stronghold of the Incas was especially exciting to the historian in me. Having the book include pictures, maps and drawing makes you feel as if you are on this journey of discovery right along with them. The history of the Incas has always been an interest to me and so I felt honored to read Forgotten Vilcabamba: Final Stronghold of the Incas and to write a review. This is a wonderfully written book.

It is hard to imagine any serious exploration into the Vilcabamba without first reading Vincent Lee's seminal book on the region. His extensive forays into this amazing corner of Peru are documented here in hugely readable style. Important historical breakthroughs, such as the discovery of the exact site of the final and decisive battle between the Incas and the Spanish, are intermixed with fascinating anecdotes about the difficulties of travelling in an area that, in the 1980's, was a hotbed of `Shining Path' terrorist activity. The post-conquest history of the Incas is well dealt with, but it is the maps that make this book so indispensable. As a trained architect Lee's plans of ruins such as Vitcos and Espiritu Pampa are so accurate and easy to follow that they have become the favoured guides used by both archaeologists and amateur visitors alike. Undoubtedly one of the most important books ever written about the Incas.
